Parents,

I need each student, regardless of role, for the rehearsals we have left. Theatre rehearsals are no different from athletic practices, especially this close to contest.  Our show is good, but like any athletic team, improves with practice. It takes everyone.

Rehearsals are as follows:

Today – Wednesday – for one hour

Friday, October 28 – NO REHEARSAL- Game at Friona

Sunday, October 30 – Public Performance – 2 PM  (Girls have basketball tryouts.  We will be through by 2:35, but non basketball people will need to stay to strike the set). Immediate family does not have to pay for this performance.

Can any parent/s video the public performances and take candid pics of the performance?

Tuesday, November 1 – Rehearsal begins at 5:30.  We may rehearse until 8 – depending on the performance Sunday.

Wednesday, November 2 – rehearsal for one hour

Friday, November 3 – rehearsal for one hour

Sunday, November 6 – Public performance at 2.  Students must stay and strike the set. Admission is $5 and $7.

The school performance is Monday, November 7

Tuesday, November 8 – Rehearsal begins at 5:30. We may rehearse until 8 – depending on the performance Sunday.

Wednesday, November 9 – we will rehearse for one hour.

November 9 Shallowater will rehearse first at 1PM.

The contest will take place at Shallowater November 10 with the first show starting at 1PM.

The directors’ meeting is scheduled for 11AM.

Schedule for next week –

 

Next week, we have a clinic on Monday –no makeup   We go on at 10:30 and kids will return to class at 1.  We will have sandwiches for them. Parents are welcome to watch.  The next clinic is October 24 in Post.

 

Tuesday middle school choir has a concert at 6.  We will have rehearsal Tuesday from 7 - 8PM.

 

Wednesday we will have rehearsal after school until 5.

 

Friday is Homecoming and we are cancelling that rehearsal.

 

Our schedule may change now from week to week until contest – I hope not.  The kids performed great Wednesday, but we have a long way to go before it is contest ready.

 

Thank you for your support on Wednesday with food and helping with the Harvest Festival booths.  I will be driving in from the workshop in Post Sunday & should be here by 1.

·         T shirt money is due Sunday, October16 -$15.00 for youth and adult sizes. If you need to postdate a check that is fine. Make it out to SISD.

·         Harvest festival is Saturday

·         The clinician canceled the clinic on the 20^th, so we have had to change to the 17^th. I will take care of lunch. They will have to return to school as soon as it is over.  We will go on at 10:30 and end at 12:30.  I’ll have sandwiches.

·         The last clinic will be on the 24^th in Post.  Make sure that we have your child’s medical release form.

·         No after school rehearsal Wednesday or Friday.  We will have a regular rehearsal 2-5 on Sunday.

Everyone	We need to hear you before we see you. IT IS HOT and the FLIES ARE BAD Don’t freeze at the beginning.  Keep working but do not make sudden moves until Basil is through with his lines. Celebrate more. Do not wait on lines in the opening scenes. song louder and ENNUNCIATE the words we need to hear the deeper voices  don't run into the curtains make sure you’re not blocking people if you are being blocked, MOVE don't stand in a straight line don't move the curtains, its distracting  don't turn your back to the audience we can see you running across try to make your heels silent don't turn your back make sure you are in the light ACT HOT make people noises so it's not an awkward silence DONT BLOCK PEOPLE getting water scene STILL BLOCKING IN WATER SCENE don't have a profile, cheat towards us i can see someone looking at their script backstage  know your lines!! just keep going!!!!! celebrating is not believable don't hit the curtains be quiet backstage •get out of sight be careful back stage DICTION ON THE SONG. Know your cues Do NOT YELL AT EACH  other – It ruins the ensemble. walk quietly, steps are too loud No happy feet. Mia	I’m not sure who you are.  If you are a kid, you need to wear the overalls.  The skirt doesn’t work because you are not acting like a lady either.
Mia and Jaden	Don’t run.
Buddy	Be playful at the beginning and be normal.  We want to see the change between you pre drowning and post drowning. The rod begins dipping when water is found. Up until then it has not moved. Be excited BECAUSE the rod dips. Be mentally challenged throughout the show.  Be consistent with walk, giggles, and itching. Melvin	know where you're going and freeze when you're supposed to. You were not engaged in the scene during the last drowning. Hit consonants and be Melvin, not an actor.
Luella & Basil	You are blocking Gage at the beginning.
Norma	Sing earlier – ask Ashlynn which song. Learn Rock of ages Watch a cadence in your speech.  You are sweet.  Walk faster humming.  Baptizing – be excited and hurry off. Maybe we should give you an apron that you can take off on your way out. The man means to give up preaching - sooner reaction to them guessing 702 is not believable don't draw our every word

Everyone	If someone is blocking you, it is your responsibility to move. Do not look at other scenes.  This is especially true of the ones with the well diggers and Buddy tying shoes. Know your cues Backstage be quiet People noises Villagers, if it is raining, look like it is raining. Step on lines Sweat and swat flies
Dewey	Don’t look at the audience when you say your first line.
Buddy	You looked too normal in the first scene and in the sad about your mama scene. Scratch more Remember your walk

October 2 Rehearsal

Everyone including lights and sound	Step on lines – Interrupt each other The audience needs to hear you before they see you – before entrances are made. Have a purpose when you enter the stage and a purpose when you leave – this is created out of your imagination. TRANSITIONS must be faster. When one line is over on one part of the stage, another begins the next scene – almost interrupting. Once CC has felt the raindrop, it is raining in the background. So people moving in back, need to be getting wet. Kallan is the only one who is doing this. In the beginning song/dance movement, everyone must be COMMITTED. The song must have energy and you have to have diction as you sing. We need to see the mother see her son. Dewey, more into the dance. NO FREEZES IN THE FIRST FEW SCENES WITH WELL DIGGERS AND TYING THE SHOES.  STEP ON LINES IN THESE SCENES. Every entrance and exit must have purpose. One-liners – use the lines as a transition. At the end,SLO MO on breathIN (last syllable) SLO MO UnSLO MO with WOULD you listen to me? Would you listen to ME? SLO MO WITH ME Jennie Mae’s BudDY last syllable DY SLO MO UP unslo mo with And the glory forever. Ferris enters with Amen. At the end, Fix stage picture End – blue on people at the river. Spot on Basil and Dewey After Basil’s speech, light goes off Dewey and Basil and is still blue on actors. Fade light down and fade Amazing grace.
Dewey and Basil	Be in the hardware store and move further downstage.We need to hear you before we see you. People noises as you are conversing. SLOW DOWN Basil, draw your words out more instead of being so choppy
Women	Work off each other.  You are gossipy people People noises as you are conversing.
Will	In drowning scene, come in from the back.
CC Buddy	Jelly Beans – put your arm around Buddy as if it is a conspiracy and you need his help.  Look at the jar, consider, then 700 and Buddy is concentrating too and says two like there are only two beans in the jar. Breathing scene – we need to see CC’s expressions.  In getting him to breathe, put both arms around him and show him how to breathe.  You are facing the audience.  Then decide how you can move so that your expression is still visible, CC. Line- You know what?   Be face to face. We need to see CC’s decision to go to the river and Buddy’s decision to do the same. People noises as you are conversing. See decision to shake Buddy’s hand. Interrupt Norma
CC, Darlene, Jaden	CC tips hat to girls and says Ladies Girls Hello Mr. Showers and die giggling.
Jaden/Mom	Fix the picnic, hug Buddy, turn around to do something with the basket, hear his cry and jump in.
Lights	Be sure light changes are quick.  Follow people as they cross the stage.  Blue wash whenever there is water.
CC Buddy Jennie Mae	Work on sunshine scene CC & JM look at each other and make the decision not to chase after Buddy People noises as you are conversing. Exit – Buddy and Jennie Mae more frantic.  Jennie Mae is MAD
Buddy	Get out of the water with purpose. Rework he has to find her Whenever you say Mama, it’s a sad word. Must be scared about water. Be excited to see CC since he is a brand new person. Don’t rush lines about your mama We need to hear you before you make each entrance.
Norma	In some way – be oblivious to CC’s temper outburst.  Hum a happy OLD hymn loudly on your cross to Left stage.   Remember Kathryn Kuhlman.
Darlene Dewey Norma	Kids enter USL We must HEAR you before we SEE you. Talk about anything. Norma starts reprimanding Darlene as soon as she sees her.  Darlene, sit on the downstage stool. People noises as you are conversing.
Jennie Mae CC	See the decision to find Buddy after first raindrop.
CC	Help Buddy with overall buttons. Look over your shoulder, facing the audience when you are talking to the singers. When you turn to face them, is when Buddy falls. You have a hard job, but we need to see your face, not profiles. We need to keep seeing your decision to pray. React to Buddy touching the water.  You have done something no one else has been able to do. This makes up for not feeling anything when you preach.
Ferris	Be more loving toward Buddy.  More people noises.  Laugh with Buddy. Stern but not angry when Buddy messes up. You came in too soon at the end.
Ferris Buddy	More reaction to Buddy emptying CC’s suitcase. Slow this scene down some. Buddy, vocals afraid of a whipping.
Norma and Luella	More vocals and energy
Goldie, CC, Ferris	Step on lines.  Goldie- flirt with CC
Buddy Ferris CC	Need to look out the 3 foot wide window at the rain.  Ferris, squint your eyes. Put hand up to shade sun. Buddy is scared Ferris is concerned and conflicted – wants the rain, but knows how it affects  Buddy CC is confused.
Darlene Jennie Mae Buddy Jaden	Darlene, your story needs to start out small and gain momentum.  The others need to gradually show more interest until you are almost in Darlene’s lap.
